When Ambition Tests Family's Bond, it Reveals Life’s Surprises
A big dreamer with ambitions greater than himself, Buddy Smart (Bryan Cranston) is determined to keep his family’s theater business afloat while inspiring his sons, Les (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) and Derrick (Jack Champion), to dream just as big. But things change when the smarts are forced to navigate family tension and unexpected events that reshape their lives in ways never imagined. Directed by Jon S. Baird and written by Stevens Rogers, Everything’s Going to Be Great stars Cranston, Allison Janney, Ainsworth, and Champion, blending comedy and drama.
A Hint on The Plot
Everything’s Going To Be Great is a comedy-drama that informs the audience about the unpredictability of life, with a reasonable amount of humor and family tension, to show how meaning often comes from unexpected shifts. It follows the lives of a family whose source of income is from the operation of a theater, but things change sooner than the audience might expect. Buddy Smart (Bryan Cranston) has big dreams, and he advises his sons, Les and Derrick, to do the same and to believe that everything will work out just as it is planned. Smart represents the true nature of a father figure in this film through his positive, affirmative words and actions. Even when his wife is angry, he always finds a soothing way of returning her to a better, if not happier, state of mind. Although at some point, it seems like Smart is the only one left with a sizable amount of faith, even his wife is skeptical due to the risk he took with his family. But Smart is indeed smart and able to make things work, and just when he’s about to achieve his goals, an unimagined event that entirely changed everything occurred.
Before this event, Les (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) witnessed a devastating one that involved his mom, and it left him severely hurt and confused about whether to keep it to himself or spread it. In Everything’s Going To Be Great, Les shares a resemblance with his dad, not in looks but in mindset and passion. Les plays his role perfectly well in portraying an intelligent kid, whereas his brother, Derrick (Jack Champion), appears to be the black sheep of the family due to his distinct passion, which is football. However, he and Les had a dispute after he said something demeaning regarding their father. This scene is emotional due to the serious things Derrick said, but even more emotional because of how Les supported his father’s accomplishments. Everything’s Going To Be Great points out how people, even family, would have doubts when it takes a really long time to accomplish an objective. But Cranston depicted how one needs to be firm in pursuit of their goals even when everyone sees it as unrealistic.
What’s Great About ‘Everything’s Going To Be Great’
Everything’s Going To Be Great was written by Stevens Rogers and directed by Jon S. Baird, a Scottish director who’s known for directing Tetris. This film stars Bryan Cranston, the lead actor from Breaking Bad, and he proves his versatility as an actor in Everything’s Going To Be Great. Fans of Cranston know him for his role as a methamphetamine chemist in Breaking Bad, but in Everything’s Going To Be Great, Cranston is just a law-abiding citizen who runs a show business to sustain his family. His performance in Everything’s Going To Be Great is a reflection of a relentlessly optimistic and loving human character. Cranston brought warmth, vulnerability, and genuine charm to his role. The relationship he has with his sons in this film will inspire one to become a father, and the same goes for his wife, Macy (Allison Janney). Janney’s performance in Everything’s Going To Be Great describes the supportive nature of women. She supported her husband’s dream in the best way she could, but just when everything was about to get better, she did the unthinkable.
Janney embodied her role effortlessly. Her chemistry with Cranston serves as the film’s emotional core, but she went from a dutiful wife to an independent rebuilder. This shows the audience how quickly things can change in life.
Another outstanding actor in Everything’s Going To Be Great is Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Les), who was mightily excellent in his performance. His character, Les, is a smart kid who appears weird to his mates due to his passion and dreams. Les has a heavy contribution to the film’s dialogue. From his humorous and witty responses to how he uses curse words, he is always on point. His fascinating wit and ability to think two steps ahead of the people around him add a natural tension to every exchange. Whenever Les speaks, it carries gravitas because of the clever way he speaks and the authority behind his delivery. In many ways, his presence in the film uplifts the dialogue from simple conversations into driving forces of the plot. That scene where Les mocks his brother Derrick is one of most telling moments of his humorous personality in Everything’s Going To Be Great. Les sarcastically admits that he thought about Derrick the night before after Derrick accused him of being selfish but then he went on to wake Derrick up from the bed of sarcasm by telling him that he got so bored of thinking about him. This is one of the scenes that captures his clever humor that defines his character. The film’s dialogue is fascinating, thanks to Ainsworth and Cranston for their outstanding performance, which significantly supported the film.
The Warmth Texture
Everything’s Going To Be Great is shot beautifully, with standard camera movement that captures important moments in the film. The cinematographer, Mark Wolf does well in aligning the film’s captivating dialogue with the right visual rhythm. Wolf replaces excessively flashy shots with clean, deliberate, and natural shots–lingering on the characters faces just long enough to capture unspoken emotions and framing them in ways that highlight the power dynamics at play. He also uses long shots in scenes where it is needed. When the Smart family was leaving town, while they were driving, the camera lingered on the car’s movement from a very far distance, following it steadily. This effect might seem ordinary but it transforms a simple departure into something that feels weighted with meaning.
As for the lighting, its warm, intimate tone dominates scenes of vulnerability, while the cooler palettes highlight moments of detachment. The lighting matches the country’s nature of the film, as the warmth of the environments is reflected in the visuals. It also complements the skin tone of the characters, bringing out the natural texture of their performances. The use of warm balanced tones gave the film an authentic feel, as it allows each actor’s expressions to come through with clarity.
The songs of Everything’s Going To Be Great plays a vital part in shaping the film’s flow. Rolfe Kent, the music composer for this film made sure that instead of dominating the scenes, the songs are woven in with restraint, supporting the dialogue and tone without pulling attention away from the characters. The church scene with Selena’s voice carrying through the sanctuary fits directly into the film’s broader themes. With Les, his mom, and Derrick sitting together, the performance almost reflects a fractured dynamic: a song rooted deep in faith and unity, placed against a family struggling to find that.
So Far, So Good
Everything’s Going To Be Great stands out for its unique storyline and witty dialogue, allowing it to engage audiences who enjoy the attributes of a true drama. Watching Ainsworth and Cranston’s performance in this film doesn’t just prove their brilliant acting skills, but it also proves the director’s outstanding brainwork in casting and plot. Audiences who enjoy drama and humorous dialogue will find it captivating due to its realistic nature.
