Fridays Will Get A Little Freakier
The sequel to the beloved early 2000s Disney movie has already officially begun production, with numerous actors from the original hit returning to reprise their roles. The cast continues to grow as the actor portraying Lindsay Lohan’s husband has been revealed.
A History of Remakes
Freaky Friday was a 2003 Disney film that was an adaptation of the 1972 children’s book written by Mary Rodgers. The 2003 film was the third adaptation of the book, and the fifth film in the Freaky Friday franchise. The first Freaky Friday film was released in theaters in 1976, followed by two TV films Summer Switch in 1984 and A Billion for Boris in 1985. A remake of Freaky Friday was then aired on ABC in 1995, as part of a series of remakes of beloved Disney films including remakes of Escape to Witch Mountain, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, and The Shaggy Dog. Following the 2003 film, a fourth adaptation was released on the Disney Channel in 2018.
2003’s Freaky Friday starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as the mother-daughter duo. Freaky Friday followed Anna, an aspiring teenage musician, and her psychiatrist mother, Tess. The two are unable to get along and are constantly arguing with each other. After visiting a Chinese restaurant and receiving fortune cookies with cryptic messages, the two wake up the next day in each other’s bodies. As they figure out how to switch back, they must learn to understand each other and find a new sense of respect. Originally, there were apprehensions about making a third adaptation, especially so close to the release of the 1995 television movie. However, with a $26 million budget, the film became a smash hit, earning $160 million, and also becoming a beloved classic. Mark Waters directed the film based on a screenplay written by Heather Hach and Leslie Dixon.

As Freakier Friday, the announced title for the sequel, begins filming, more details regarding the project have emerged. Manny Jacinto, known for The Good Place, The Acolyte, and Top Gun: Maverick, was cast in an unknown role. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lohan and Curtis revealed who Jacinto is portraying.
“Manny plays Lindsay’s husband,” Curtis told Entertainment Weekly. “But that’s as much as we can say,” Lohan jumped in after Curtis adding, “Manny is lovely, so funny.”
Lohan and Curtis are not the only ones reprising their roles from the 2003 film. Mark Harmon, who plays Tess’s husband and Anna’s stepfather, is returning, along with Chad Michael Murray as Jake, Anna’s boyfriend. Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Lucille Soong are also reported to be returning. The sequel will be directed by Nisha Ganatra and written by Jordan Weiss. Currently, Freakier Friday doesn’t have a release date but is expected to be in theaters sometime in 2025.
2003’s Freaky Friday is currently streaming on Disney+.
