‘Highest 2 Lowest’ (2025): A Review

A Life-Altering Situation Sometimes Requires Sacrifice

Highest 2 Lowest is Spike Lee’s recent collaboration with Denzel Washington. It tells the story of a music mogul, David King, who is forced to make a hard choice after a kidnapping. The movie is a balance of strong acting with tense moments, showing the weight of sacrifice

The Storyline

Highest 2 Lowest, a crime thriller inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, dives into the life of a music mogul, who is met with a difficult dilemma. David King (Denzel Washington), a father and record label owner, is targeted by a kidnapper who thought kidnapping was the best way to get back at King. King is portrayed as a well-respected man, seeing as he’s famous for having the best ears in the industry, but his reputation and wealth are threatened when Kyle (Elijah Wright), a family friend around the same age as his son, is kidnapped for ransom. This theme highlights the realistic feel of the film because audiences can relate to the tough spot Washington finds himself in. Paying a substantial amount as ransom for a friend’s son when you’re on the edge of losing your business is a situation that comes with hard choices and requires wisdom and critical thinking before making one.

Washington’s character reflects the duality of strength and values. After making the hardest choice he’s ever made, King faces a series of betrayals and mighty setbacks, but he doesn’t lose composure. He brought the original Denzel Washington personality to his performance in Highest 2 Lowest. Every gesture, every line delivered carries Washington’s charisma and quiet intensity that he’s known for, paired with his loving wife, Pam (Ifenesh Hadera), who effortlessly aced her role in the film. It is not surprising that her performance as a wife and mother is exceptional in all ramifications, as this is her forte. In Highest 2 Lowest, she not only played the role of a wife and mother but also a comforter. Her character is an example of a wife who knows and understands the ways of getting through to her husband. This is subtle in the film because she exudes it in a way that makes it feel natural. Yung Felon (A$AP ROCKY) is the film’s mystical anchor, as he was the subject of suspense. He brought originality to his performance, which doesn’t strike as much of a surprise for an artist.

Spike Lee Didn’t Disappoint

Directed by Spike Lee, Highest 2 Lowest was written by Alan Fox and produced by Todd Black (The Pursuit of Happyness, The Equalizer). Highest 2 Lowest marks the fifth collaboration between Lee and Washington, and the first in 19 years since Inside Man (2006). Lee’s directorial brilliance is seen in all scenes of Highest 2 Lowest. From getting the right cast to fixing them in roles that suit their skills, Lee deserves credit for this masterpiece. And he wasn’t exaggerating when he mentioned that A$AP goes toe-to-toe with Washington in Highest 2 Lowest, according to Hollywood Reporter. When fate places King and Felon in a studio together, the viewers can see two music lovers dropping bars and figuratively going toe-to-toe. Rocky’s character, Felon, is an arrogant, proud, up-and-coming artist in Highest 2 Lowest, and he embodies the role so well. But his appearance in the film feels too brief, and his scenes are towards the latter part of the film. With the kind of role he plays, it is only normal that his presence in the film deserves longevity.

As for Washington, his performance is incredibly solid.

The way he expresses his disbelief after a series of conversations with Gabe (Wendell Pierce), Alex (Fred Weller), and Patrick (Michael Potts) is legendary. The audience can feel the reality of King from the realistic body language he uses to show the emotions he feels inside, and this takes place after the choice he made regarding the kidnapping. Washington’s performance stands out for the charisma and swag he brought to his role. Jeffrey Wright stars as Paul Christopher, and he is more than a chauffeur to Washington in the film; he’s more like family. He supported the film’s dialogue with rhyme-based wordplay and pun. Christopher’s role is an important one because it has the ability to reveal the character’s sense of entitlement. However, he remained humble and respectful during this tempting period. The coming together of these brilliant actors and the director makes Highest 2 Lowest flawless.

The Exquisite Touch of Matthew Libatique

Headed by Matthew Libatique, Highest 2 Lowest’s cinematography makes a bold statement from the first frame. The welcoming scene shows King in his penthouse eventually. Libatique takes a long, wide shot slowly from lower buildings up to King’s penthouse, which shows the artistic glass view of Manhattan, and immediately informs the audience of King’s powerful status. This brilliant technique that Libatique uses quickly captivates the attention of the audience because of its uniqueness and the creativity behind it. The way Pam is welcomed into her first scene also stands out due to Libatique’s creative use of cameras. As she walks down the twisted stairway, he captures her from the mirror opposite the stairs, then from the back of the stairs, and finally from her back view before revealing her face. Libatique’s touch in Highest 2 Lowest is true creativity. The camera movement in the scene where Washington accidentally drops a bag on a moving train that falls under a railway proves Libatique’s professionalism. Even though it’s a fast-paced situation, the camera didn’t lose sight of the bag during this falling process–it captured the whole thing. The lighting feels natural and slightly warm, as it clearly highlights scenes that need to be seen brightly.

Highest 2 Lowest has some of the best soundtracks that support the message of its scenes, all thanks to Howard Drossin for scoring the film. The first song played in the opening part of the film, “What a Beautiful Mornin”, couldn’t be more appropriate. As the song is being played, the camera glides over the beautiful city just when the day is getting started, creating room for unity between the visuals and the music. Another scene that highlights Drossin’s scoring sense is the scene where Christopher and King are driving to the kidnapper’s apartment, definitely not for peace talks. While Washington seems to be in the spirit of boxing as he rhythmically punches against air, James Brown’s “Paybackis being played. Aside from the fact that the song’s title is the same as the purpose of King going to the kidnapper’s, the song also resonates with the mood of Christopher and King in this scene. Drossin made sure that the scenes with soundtracks in Highest 2 Lowest blend with the message of the film.

What the Viewers Should Expect

Highest 2 Lowest is a classical masterpiece that stands out for not just the critical storyline and remarkable actors but for the cinematography and the aesthetically pleasing world it is set in. The film is a mix of drama, thriller, and action with a touch of humor in the dialogue. This makes it a good watch for a variety of audiences.
