Borderlands (2024) Official Lionsgate Movies Trailer
Was She in the Wrong?
While promoting the upcoming Borderlands film with MTV, actress Jamie Lee Curtis (who will be portraying Dr. Patricia Tannis) was asked the question, “What phase is Marvel in right now?” to which she responded, “Bad.” The both hilarious and offensive answer caused quite the stir online and has led to Curtis retracting and apologizing for her quick answer.
Public Scrutiny
After her snarky response went viral, Curtis received both laughter from fans as well as the passionate rage from the same group of people. The Oscar-winning actress went to Twitter, “My comments about Marvel were stupid and I will do better. I’ve reached out to Kevin Feige and will no longer play in that mud slinging sandbox of competition we call the internet nor will I engage in the toilet paper promotion or game play that is designed for clicks not content or conversation.”
What initially appeared as a clever remark poking fun at the genuine sentiments of many Marvel fans has unfortunately escalated into a much bigger situation. The comments of the YouTube video that contained the interview were a harsh mix of reactions. However, there is some hypocrisy surrounding the controversy. Marvel’s recent film Deadpool & Wolverine spent a bulk of its runtime actively slamming both Marvel and Disney’s recent rough patch in the past few years. Ryan Reynolds (who starred, produced, and wrote for the Deadpool trilogy) responded to Curtis’ tweet saying, “Wait, is everyone expected to apologize for slamming Marvel post-Endgame?”
Borderlands’ Reputation
Needless to say, this debacle has not exactly helped in getting audiences hyped up for the new Lionsgate film. Directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands will loosely follow the storylines of the Take-Two Interactive video game series of the same name. The film, despite not yet being released to the public, has already been under fire by hardcore fans whose expectations are not being met. However, with the large budget, celebrity-filled cast, and a chaotically passionate film director, the movie will certainly still be worth the watch. Especially since other action-dominating studios have been focused on quantity over quality. According to a May, 2024 article from IGN, Marvel will be following a stricter schedule of releasing two or three movies a year and two shows a year to try and keep up continued excitement for the MCU.
Borderlands will be released to theaters August 9, 2024. Until then, audiences can see Curtis’ recent Oscar-winning role in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once on Netflix and Hulu.
