Robert Downey Doom
Avengers: Doomsday (2026) Official Marvel Studios Trailer
It was recently announced that Iron Man actor Robery Downey Jr. would go from hero to villain in the MCU by taking on the role of Doctor Doom. Downey’s character will replace Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, who is upset by the reveal.
RDJ Doom Reveal
Over the weekend, at the San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the MCU as a villain this time, starring as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled to be released in 2026. While a lot of fans are upset that Downey is playing both Iron Man and Doctor Doom in the same universe, the original comics contained multiple stories in which Tony Stark became Doctor Doom and Doctor Doom became Iron Man. Upon learning that Downey would be playing Doctor Doom — who would be replacing Kang the Conqueror — Kang’s actor Jonathan Majors openly stated that he was “heartbroken” over the reveal.
Jonathan Majors MCU
Jonathan Majors played Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), appearing in the 2023 film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Major’s character was a man named Victor Timely, who was a scientist from the 31st century. After discovering the multiverse, he joined the Council of Kangs, a group of Victor Timely variants that control a portion of the multiverse. Kang serves as the primary antagonist in the newest Ant-Man movie, where he and his variants rule the Quantum Realm, a subatomic universe that exists outside of space and time, and can only be accessed through subatomic particles and forms of mystical magic.
Marvel Cuts Ties With Majors
On March 5, 2023, Jonathan Majors was arrested and charged with strangulation, assault, and harassment after he had a domestic disturbance with his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. There were a few delays, but eventually Majors was found guilty on two accounts of assault and harassment. He was acquitted of the attentional assaults in the third degree and aggravated assault in the second degree charges, despite pleading not guilty on all charges. Majors managed to avoid jail time but was sentenced to a year of counseling. After he was found guilty, Marvel cut ties with Major. Still, he hopes to return to the film industry, and soon, according to his attorney.
Majors’ Reaction To Reveal
Majors reported to TMZ that he felt “heartbroken” over the reveal that Robert Downey Jr. would be playing Doctor Doom, replacing Major’s character Kang the Conqueror in the MCU. He also shared his thoughts on his own character and Downey’s upcoming role, stating “Of course, I love him. I love Kang. Doctor Doom is wicked though.” Despite the termination of his contract and character due to legal issues, Jonathan Majors doesn’t seem to harbor any resentment toward Downey or Ezra Miller, who were both given chances to return to Hollywood with criminal charges. Majors says, “I think it’s fair that Mr. Downey is being and has been greeted with patience and curiosity and love and that Mr. Miller has gotten the same treatment and that they’re being allowed to work their art and be creative at that level. I didn’t really get that.” He was also asked if he would want to return as Kang in the future, to which he responded with: “Hell yeah, hell yeah, hell yeah. I love him.”
