The Dark Comedy Exposes The Dark Underbelly Of Wellness Culture

Max Minghella’s sophomore feature Shell is generating buzz online with a poster in time for the film’s release at TIFF. Bloody Disgusting revealed a monstrous-looking claw in a smoky background, suggesting the film will be nothing less than terrifying.

What’s ‘Shell’ About?

Inside the horror, Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man), Kate Hudson, and Kaia Gerber are entangled in a wellness operation that has lethal consequences. Furthermore, according to the synopsis on Bloody Disgusting, the project features Samantha Lake (Moss), a struggling actress who begins a journey into the dazzling world of Zoe Shannon (Hudson), the CEO of a health/wellness company called “Shell.” As the company’s patients, including star Chloe Benson (Gerber), begin to go missing, Samantha realizes that Shell may not just provide rejuvenation, but rather copious amounts of bloodshed. The script was written by Jack Stanley, known for the thriller The Passenger. The director, Minghella, made his directorial debut with 2018’s Teen Spirit, but he’s perhaps better known as an actor with roles in Spiral: From the Book of Saw and Alexandre Aja’s Horns.

Wildly Entertaining Genre Movie

According to Bloody Disgusting, Minghella has described his darkly comedic film as a wildly entertaining genre movie with iconic characters and universal themes that are bound to have people talking long after they leave the theater. Recently, he expressed his excitement about bringing this project to the big screen with an amazing cast and the support of Black Bear International, Love & Squalor, and Automatik. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Minghella said, “I try to use the mentality of, “What is the Blu-ray that I wish I could pull off my shelf right now, which I can’t, because it doesn’t exist yet.” As an audience member, I was yearning to see a film like this. And I’m really happy that you were both covering your eyes and having a good giggle. That’s the intention.”

A Character Unlike Any Other

In turn, Moss describes the script as uniquely “entertaining” and “singular.” She mentioned that Minghella approached her about headlining the cast, which was a delightful and unexpected surprise, even though they were previous costars on the mega-popular series, The Handmaid’s Tale. Moss further notes that the character she will portray in this film is unlike any she has ever tackled before. The highly anticipated feature is set to make its debut at TIFF on Thursday, September 12, at 9:30 p.m.
