Rebecca Miller Captures Scorsese’s Journey Behind the Lens
Apple TV+ released the trailer for Mr. Scorsese last Wednesday, a five-part documentary series about 11-time Oscar-nominated director-writer-producer Martin Scorsese. It is directed by Rebecca Miller.
Who Will be in The Documentary?
The docuseries, which premiered over the weekend in the heart of Scorsese’s hometown, New York City, at the New York Film Festival, is set to arrive on the streamer Apple TV+ on October 17th. Deadline reported that Mr. Scorsese has one of a kind footage and in-depth interviews with friends, topping the list are his frequent leading actors Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio, along with Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, Thelma Schoonmaker, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Paul Schrader, Margot Robbie, and Cate Blanchett; his children; wife Helen Morris; and childhood friends.
Scorsese’s Body of Work
According to Deadline, the five-part series will feature interviews with Scorsese, the people he’s worked with, and highlights from his filmography, to give a fuller picture of the filmmaker whose movie collection often wrestles with the question of whether humans are naturally evil or good (“I struggle with that all the time,” says Scorsese in the trailer). His career, starting with the 1967 film Who’s That Knocking at My Door which stars Harvey Keitel and continuing with titles such as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed (his only Oscar for Best Director win so far), The Wolf of Wall Street and his last film, 2023 Best Picture Oscar nominee Killers of the Flower Moon. (In addendum: Deadline, earlier this month, announced that Scorsese has a ghost story thriller, What Happens at Night, in production starring DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence).
Tip of The Iceberg
Miller told The Week that the documentary was born out of around 20 hours of conversations between her and Scorsese over a period of five years. “So there would be these conversations that would last five hours. I remember once we literally lost the light, because I realized at a certain point that it would be much better if everyone left the room. So I would let the crew leave, we would set up the cameras, and then they would leave, and it would really feel like we were alone. And as time went on, we really did forget. I mean, in fact, the framing was crazy,” she said. Miller also mentioned that Scorsese was clear about being truthful and reaching corners that he previously didn’t explore.. She added, “We had to do a lot of adjustments, but it was worth it, because there was just something he decided, I think, to honor this thing that he decided to do with a certain kind of honesty and an openness and an unwillingness to kind of tread the ground that he’d already tread. He really wanted to till new earth, I guess, and I think that was that. So that was always the backbone. And then everything came from those conversations, like all my archival dives and all my searches.” The executive producers of Mr. Scorsese are Miller and Damon Cardasis, Cindy Tolan, Rick Yorn, Christopher Donnelly, and Julie Yorn. Ron Burkle is the producer of the docuseries, which is presented by Expanded Media and Round Films together with LBI Entertainment and Moxie Pictures.
