An Icon in Television History
Writer and producer of one of the longest-running series in television history, George Schenck, has died at the age of 82. Schenck passed away peacefully on August 3 in his Brentwood, CA home.
The Legacy in Television
Schenck’s death was announced by his family. His wife, Virginia Schenck, passed away last year. The couple was married for more than 50 years. Schenck is survived by his two sons Kirk and Jeff, daughters-in-law Allison and Natalie, and grandchildren Aidan, Andrew, Ryan, Jordan, and Owen.
The highlight of Schenck’s career was his time working on NCIS, a police procedural on CBS. The series debuted on September 23, 2003, and is still airing. It currently consists of 21 seasons, with season 22 premiering soon. Schenck joined the hit series during its ninth season as an executive producer. Following the death of Gary Glasberg, the previous showrunner for NCIS in 2016, Schenck took over as co-showrunner alongside Cardea. Schenck retired from the series in 2018. During his time on the series, Schenck wrote 48 episodes.
Star of the first 19 seasons of NCIS Mark Harmon, who portrayed NCIS Supervisory Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, released a statement following the announcement of Schenck’s death.

“So sorry to hear the news on George,” Harmon wrote. “The professionalism and tenacity of George and Frank changed the face of the show. I’m so appreciative of the team and teamwork they both represented.”
Schenck’s Early Years
Long before he found success in television with NCIS, Schenck had a career in the 1970s and 80s with numerous projects. He was the son of Aubrey Schenck, a film and television producer, and great-nephew of Nicholas and Joseph Schenck, who operated MGM and 20th Century Fox during the Golden Age of Hollywood.
During the 80s, Schenck ran the production company Schenck/Cardea Productions, which he operated alongside writer and producer Frank Cardea. The production company had affiliations with Columbia Pictures Television. His producing credits on television trace back to the 70s and 80s, on such series as Fantasy Island and Crazy Like a Fox. Beyond television, Schenck has credits on the 1976 science fiction film Futureworld, the 1974 TV movie The Phantom of Hollywood, 1991’s The Hit Man, and 1993 Dying to Remember.
Schenck was known for being a devoted mentor for aspiring writers. In honor of his support, his family is requesting donations to be made to the Writers Guild Foundation, in place of flowers. A private memorial service is being held for close friends and family.
NCIS is available to stream on Netflix.
