Longlegs (2024) Official NEON Trailer
Production for ‘Madden’ Continues
Last year’s announcement of a film about Super Bowl-winning head coach John Madden generated a buzz as the project entered development. To the surprise of many, Nicolas Cage has been confirmed to be lending his Academy Award-winning talents to the movie.
The Film
As the project is still in early pre-production, very little is known about the movie. Last year, rumors pegged Will Ferrell as the front-runner for the lead role, but this was never confirmed by either the director (David O. Russell) or Amazon MGM, which will be overseeing the feature. Russell (Three Kings, The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) had his effort for re-writing the original screenplay derailed by the recent writer’s strike. With production back on track, casting has begun for the film, starting with Cage. At this time, it’s unclear if Ferrell will have a role in the film, or if he was ever actually considered for the part. The original script was written by Cambron Clark, who is relatively unknown within Hollywood. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, earning his MFA in Screenwriting, and has contributed freelance jokes to The Onion.
John Madden
Although subject to change, the current synopsis for Madden reads, “After being forced into retirement by the Oakland Raiders, fiery former NFL head coach John Madden teams up with a mild-mannered Harvard programmer to rewrite his fading legacy by building the world’s first football video game.” As the plot doesn’t reflect the actual events of Madden’s life, the movie will likely serve as a re-imagining of the coach’s storied career. In actuality, Madden’s decision to retire from coaching was at his own behest, citing health concerns and a desire to spend more time with his family. Madden was approached six years after his retirement by Trip Hawkins, who founded his own video game publishing company (Electronic Arts) two years earlier. Hawkins sought Madden out as a spokesperson and a consultant for their upcoming project. Madden insisted the game be as realistic as possible, requiring the game to feature full 11-man teams. This decision of simulation would revolutionize the sports genre within gaming.
Cage’s most recent film, Longlegs, is still available in select theaters nationwide.
