Nicole Kidman Didn’t Accept Best Actress Award Due to Her Mother’s Death

In the Midst of Critical Acclaim, Tragedy Has Struck

The Award

After Nicole Kidman was name the Best Actress winner at the Venice International Film Festival, Babygirl director Halina Reijn took the stage to deliver a heartfelt statement on behalf of the absent star. Reijn informed the audience that Kidman had intended to attend the ceremony in person, even traveling to Venice, but had been forced to leave abruptly due to the devastating news of her mother’s passing.

According to Variety, reading from Kidman’s prepared remarks, Reijn shared the emotional message with the audience: “Today, I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after my brave and beautiful mother, Janelle Anne Kidman, had just passed,” Kidman wrote. “I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her.”

Kidman’s deeply personal statement continued with her tribute to her mother. Nicole said, “She shaped me, she guided me and she made me. I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking. My heart is broken.” The audience was visibly moved by the tribute, with many expressing their condolences for Kidman’s loss and their admiration for her ability to connect her triumph to her mother’s legacy during such a difficult time.

Venice Acclaim

According to Deadline, during a press interview at Venice, Kidman described making the film Babygirl as “very freeing,” adding, “The film is obviously, yes, about sex; it’s about desire, it’s about your inner thoughts, it’s about secrets, it’s about marriage, it’s about truth, power, consent … This is one woman’s story, and I hope a very liberating story. It’s told by a woman through her gaze … and that’s to me what made it so unique was that suddenly I was going to be in the hands of a woman with this material and it was very deep to share those things and very freeing.”

The erotic thriller Babygirl, featuring Kidman and Harris Dickinson (Triangle of Sadness), made its debut at the Venice Film Festival last week, receiving a seven-minute standing ovation from the audience. The well-received A24 production centers on Kidman’s character, a successful executive, whose career and marriage (with Antonio Banderas playing her husband) get thrown into jeopardy when she embarks on a passionate affair with her young intern. Following its Venice premiere, the film is set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival before its U.S. release on Christmas Day.
