‘Quicksand’ (2023): A Review

Trapped by Nature, Freed by Emotion

Quicksand, a film directed by Andrés Beltránthe, is more than just a deadly patch of earth that threatens to swallow its victims whole. This film serves as a core image to illustrate the feeling of being immobile and emotionally confined.

Loves Breaking Point

Sofia and Josh are a couple who are facing deep relationship issues. They travel to Colombia to attend a medical conference. While there, they decide to go hiking. But the trip takes a dark turn when Sofia falls into a pit of quicksand, and Josh gets trapped while trying to save her. The reasons behind Sofia and Josh’s fractured relationship are demonstrated through flashbacks and snippets of their conversations. Trust between them has deteriorated. Words have become weapons. Resentments that once festered in silence now erupt under the pressure. The quicksand becomes a confessional — dangerous but intimate too. When you’re truly stuck and escape isn’t an option, you’re left only with your truth. Sofia escapes and then brings back help for Josh’s rescue. Their survival efforts and relationship issues propel the plot forward.

The quicksand acts as a catalyst, compelling the struggling couple to face their problems and cooperate. While their initial interactions were marked by hostility and disagreement, their later ability to work together signals a potential path towards peace. The film finds its emotional core in its exploration of vulnerability. In most survival films, strength is shown through action, but here it is not the case; strength is emotional. It’s remarkable being able to watch two individuals, paralyzed by their circumstances, reveal their fears and past failings. Their hesitant connection is not born of panic, but a hopeful belief that this ordeal can serve as the impetus for them to break free and grow.

Teamwork In The Trenches

The actors Allan Hawco and Carolina Gaitá, who played Josh and Sofia, seemed to have worked well together. Both actors described their on-screen dynamic as clicking “really well”. Each person on the team contributed, and their work resulted in an entertaining movie. Pre-filming interactions between the cast proved to be beneficial because they helped contribute to the creation of believable character backstories. The crews had a positive and productive working relationship, despite the difficult filming conditions. The group was described as talented and dedicated.

The lack of realism and believability, and a weak script and dialogue, led to the film’s poor performance.

There are inconsistencies found in the film’s execution as well as a lack of visual exploration of the setting, which detracts from its overall quality. Overall, the film has a compelling objective, but the story is predictable, and the emotional resolution is weak. Some subplots briefly detract from the main story. The ending becomes a disagreement with its realistic avoidance of emotional release, appreciated by some and seen as anticlimactic by others.

What You See and Hear

There are effective tension-building shots and creative visuals that are present in the film’s cinematography. The close-ups and lighting created a visual representation of entrapment. The film utilized low angles to portray character vulnerability and shallow depth of field to highlight immediate danger; this contribution brings about a sense of claustrophobia. The soundtrack played a pivotal role in heightening anticipation and keeping the audience on edge. Tension, survival, and psychological distress were woven into the fabric of the atmosphere, which visually represented the unraveling of the couple’s relationship.

Dive Into Emotional Wounds

The film demonstrates a commendable skill in portraying the interplay between external forces and internal struggles. Relationship subplots often resort to stereotypes or shallow sniping to generate tension. Quicksand doesn’t resort to this. It doesn’t just put Sofia and Josh in harm’s way and sit back and watch; it makes a psychological profile of both of them. Behind the fighting in their relationship is a laced narrative of old pains and the steady loss of mutual understanding.

Quicksand symbolizes the struggle for emotional survival, a more challenging trap than a physical one. It points out how people can get stuck in patterns, silence, and fear, which requires honesty, courage, and the willingness to change. Quicksand blends heart and horror, reminding one that putting up with each other can be tougher than battling nature. Sometimes, being pulled into the depths is necessary to assess our will to persevere.

Heart, Horror, and Hard Truths

It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Quicksand isn’t really just an issue of how to get out of it. Although far from flawless, Quicksand succeeds in weaving a story that is as much about the heart as it is about horror. It’s a reminder that the hardest thing to survive sometimes is not nature, but one another. And sometimes, being forced to stop and sink is exactly what we need to figure out if we’re going to continue fighting for solid ground.
