A Sinister and Stylish Summer
A surrealist journey into the world of the upper class, Saltburn is magically compelling. Directed by Emerald Fennell, the psychological thriller/drama hybrid captures a daunting vision of dark academia that is equal parts provocative and perverse. It is endlessly complex in theming, narrative, and visuals, forcing the viewer to be glued to the edge of their seat.
A Mythological Retelling
Saltburn follows the awkward Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) as he develops an unusual bond with classmate Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi). The friendship develops quickly and leads to a summer at Felix’s luxurious family estate that will change the duo’s lives forever. Saltburn is remarkable in the way the narrative unravels to constantly make the audience second-guess themselves. So much of the story is hidden beneath the surface, and peeling back each layer reveals a dark mystery that leaves more questions unanswered than before. The film touches on themes of class disparity and obsession in a way that is refreshingly poignant. It is a period piece that is undeniably modern. The film takes a snapshot of the early 2000s but patchworks it together with a modern timeless flair. It is almost otherworldly in nature and feeling, contributing to a magnetic surrealist atmospheric vision.
Stars Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi are electrifying not only with on-screen chemistry and dynamics, but also in personal performances. Keoghan is perfect as Ollie, ramping the vulnerable shyness and maniacal obsession to eleven. In contrast, Elordi is endearingly charming while maintaining a sinister aura that seeps into every scene. Outside of the leads, Rosamund Pike as Elspeth Catton puts on a dominating performance, effortlessly stealing every scene with her dry humor and quotable one-liners. The dichotomy of these different but captivating showings adds humor that blends seamlessly into the film’s uneasiness. The deep connections that are embedded in each character are also impossible to miss. From retelling ancient Greek myths, such as Theseus and the Minotaur or even classic Shakespearean theatre like A Midsummer Night’s Dream, there is an endless amount of symbolism to unpack in each performance.
A Modern Renaissance Portrait
Saltburn’s flames burn brightest in the film’s production. Director Fennell, executive producer Tom Ackerley, and cinematographer Linus Sandgren create a visually stunning film where each frame can leave viewers awestruck. The film is shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio, resembling a canvas, breaking away from typical cinematographic stylings often seen in other modern films. This turns each frame into its own work of art that further cements its gothic and Renaissance-era inspiration.
The movie is dark and understated in scenes. However, it is not afraid to break into full complex and picturesque beauty in sets and production, further cementing the artistic inspirations. Certain stills would not feel out of place in a museum, each minute detail telling its own story, similar to the paintings where Sandgren drew inspiration. Every drop of Saltburn, which was shot on 35mm film, oozes with a warm richness to counteract and hide the grime and dirt that is hidden within the narrative. The film creates a seductiveness within the cinematography that is hypnotizing, offering the perfect distraction to cloak the depravity of the characters and narrative.
The sounds of Saltburn are similarly stacked. The soundtrack and score by composer Anthony Willis and music supervisor Kirsten Lane took 2023 by storm at the time of the film’s release. Filled with era-appropriate songs such as “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers or “Sounds of The Underground” by Girls Aloud, the music used throughout the film fits the time period exactly. One of the most viral and controversial scenes in the film is capstoned with “Murder On The Dancefloor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, which skyrocketed the 2001 song back into pop culture prominence with Ellis-Bextor’s first Billboard Hot 100 appearance more than two decades after the songs release. “Probably half of the cues that ended up in Saltburn were in the script from the start,” said Lane, in an interview with GQ. It is obvious through the use of music in the film how much it and the score really played into the narrative. They fit perfectly as a snapshot of music culture for the time, but also blend seamlessly with the visuals, never taking away from them. The original score for the film is also elegant, with a mixture of orchestral instruments and arrangements that are able to capture the sinister beauty that permeates the rest of Saltburn. This again showcases Fennell and her crew’s ability to create something that is classic but never dated.
More Than Meets The Eye
Saltburn gives “eat the rich” an entirely new meaning and wears the trademark controversial and dark nature on the film’s sleeve, creating a decadent and spellbinding experience. It is a fascinating portrayal of wealth, power dynamics, and all-consuming passion that is impossible to avert attention from. The film is sexy and comedic, and the flames burn much brighter than the controversy the film collects.
