‘Shark Girl’ (2024): A Review

A Shark Week Film That Went Flat

Shark Girl is the 2024 horror/thriller film created by Tricoast Worldwide and Swim Swim Entertainment. It tells the story of a young content creator who survives a shark attack and begins to hunt and feed in Venice Beach, California. It was written and directed by Justin Shilton and Rob Zazzali. It was released during Shark Week 2024 on July 9.

A Plot With Potential

Shark Girl had so much potential to be an excellent film, but it faltered in certain parts of the plot. The film is about a content creator named Heidi, who is out taking pictures on the beach with her photographer and boyfriend, Ron. He rudely makes her get into the ocean that has been contaminated by a nuclear power plant spill, and she gets bitten by a shark. Despite falling flat in some moments, there were some moments that were intriguing. The Heidi, Gina, and Ron storyline was interesting and showed how much Heidi changed after the shark bit her. This portion of the plot allowed viewers to see how Heidi is now out for blood and taking back control. Another part of the plot that was compelling was the roles of investigative journalist Christopher and marine biologist Sienna in the film. Sienna and Christopher’s role in trying to unlock the truth of the shark attacks on the beach was gripping. From the two thinking that it could be just a shark attack, to finding out the attacks were not just on the beach, and the attacker could be a person. The best part of the movie was watching Heidi develop from a character who could not speak for herself to someone who is standing up for herself and others. The pacing of the film was quick, which made it seem that there were aspects of the plot that were missing.

An Interesting Cast Of Characters

The cast of Shark Girl consists of Alexandra Corin Johnston, Sumayyah Ameerah, Nick Tag, and Ryan Bertroche. The acting in the film was splendid and was the best aspect of the film. Alexandra Corinne Johnston played the lead role of Heidi. She was believable as a crazed, terrifying monster that was out for blood. Johnston took her role as a killer girl shark to the top. She acted as if she really was a true monster on the inside, but is being released on the outside to the world. Sumayyah Ameerah played the role of Sienna. She was one of the best characters in the film. Amerrah’s acting during the sad scenes was amazing. Viewers can feel the pain when she loses almost everyone who was important to her. But she was fierce in her decision that if she couldn’t help Heidi, then she would have to kill her to stop her from taking other people’s lives. Ryan Bertroche was an excellent choice for the role of Ron.

He played Ron so well that his acting made you hate him. He played Ron like a self-obsessed jerk. It was, without a doubt, Ron’s fault that Heidi became a shark girl. So props to Ryan Bertroche for making the audience hate Ron. Finally, Nick Tag, who played investigative journalist Christopher. Tag’s acting made audiences like him because he was the only person in the film who wanted to help Heidi. He was believable in his feelings for Summayyah Ameerah’s character, Sienna. The two actors showed that they had chemistry and played the scenes together in harmony. It was almost as if the two actors were meshed together to be one entity.

Compelling Cinematography

The 2024 film had some intriguing cinematography aspects, like aerial shots. Despite an average plot, the film did well with its cinematography. The aerial shots of places around Venice Beach were breathtaking. The beach shots and aerial shots of places like the Hollywood hills were amazing, almost as if they were taken from a documentary. The shots showed the setting of the film and the places where scenes took place. For example, there was an aerial shot of the beach where Heidi gets bitten by a radioactive shark. Another aspect of the filming of Shark Girl was the zooming shots that captured the emotions of the characters. These shots were used to create fear, sadness during death scenes, and anger for the lives that Heidi took. The best camera work in the film was during the scene where Sienna and Christopher are trying to capture Heidi. The shot was taken from the top of the hill looking down, which allowed the viewers to see Heidi walking up the hill from a character’s point of view.

The soundtrack of the film was intriguing. It brought more feeling to the film. The music that played during the fight scene with Heidi and Sienna made the scene an epic fight for the cure. This music was orchestrated and had a spooky jerking element to it.  It even made the scene more emotional as Sienna tells Heidi that she still thinks her old self is in there. The soundtrack made scenes between Sienna and Christopher devastating towards the end of the film. The twisted, jerking music in the soundtrack was used to create an intense atmosphere in the film, which did work.

‘Shark Girl’: A Decent Film For Shark Week

Overall, Shark Girl had plenty of potential to be a great film, but it fell short in terms of plot development. The film redeemed itself in the aspects of acting and cinematography. The film is a decent film to watch on Shark Week for folks who are looking for a film that is not too scary. However, remember: do not go swimming in a contaminated ocean unless you want to become a killer shark person.
