The 1930s Jim Crow South Provides Harrowing Backdrop To Thriller
Warner Bros has dropped the trailer for the upcoming gothic horror: Sinners. Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan helm the project as director and actor, which is the fifth time they have collaborated, following Fruitvale Station (2013). After their initial success over a decade ago, they joined forces again for Creed (2015) and, later, the Black Panther (2018) franchise. Moreover, Warner Bros Film Group co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy are throwing their full support behind the duo after they approved the development of Creed III (2013).
What’s It About?
According to IMDb, the film is set in 1930s Jim Crow South, a time harrowing enough even without the additional horror thrown into the mix. Deadline reports that Coogler, who wrote the film, features a “faceless monster.” At the same time, Jordan portrays a bootlegger and veteran dealing with the harsh realities of inhabiting the devout Southern enclave. The story unfolds with twin brothers (Jordan), who return to their hometown for a fresh start but discover that the idyllic space isn’t quite what it seems. According to Deadline, the trailer for Sinners escalates the tension as night descends, showcasing a character played by Hailee Steinfeld who attempts to break into a bar, prompting frightened patrons to barricade themselves inside.
Throughout the chilling two-minute trailer, supernatural elements linger in the shadows, notably illustrated by an unnerving scene featuring a boy with claw marks on his face.
Release and Promotion
Entertainment Weekly reports that Sinners had a lucrative bidding war back in February. Warner Bros finally revealed the name of the highly-anticipated project on Monday, with a massive promotional campaign featuring the hashtag #SinnersAreComing. The campaign features a striking poster showcasing Michael B. Jordan, accompanied by the tagline: “Dance with the devil, and he’ll follow you home.” This marketing approach aims to create intrigue for the film, highlighting its gothic horror elements and setting the stage for its theatrical release. The combination of the tagline and imagery suggests an unsettling exploration of themes intertwined with fear and morality.
Sinners is expected to be released in theaters on March 7, 2025, and stars other notable actors, including Miles Caton, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, Li Jun Li, and Delroy Lindo.
