‘Sonic X Shadow Generations’ (2024): A Review

A High-Speed Journey Across Time and Adventures

Thirteen years after the release of Sonic Generations, the game returns, better than ever, thanks to Sega. This time, it not only revisits the original storyline of Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic battling the Time Eater but also introduces a new, playable story centered around Shadow the Hedgehog, where his past resurfaces to haunt him. Now called Sonic X Shadow Generations, this remastered adventure brings even more excitement to the iconic franchise.

Gameplay

Modern Sonic’s birthday celebration is interrupted by the Time Eater, a powerful entity that disrupts time and scatters his friends across different eras. Teaming up with his past self, Classic Sonic, they journey through iconic locations to save their friends and uncover the Time Eater’s true power. Meanwhile, in Shadow Generations, Shadow investigates disturbances in the Space Colony ARK and encounters Black Doom, who tries to sway him to his side. Their clash traps Shadow in the White Space, a strange void created by the Time Eater. Here, Shadow gains new powers and confronts haunting memories of his past, reuniting with figures he thought were lost forever, Maria and Dr. Gerald Robotnik.

While the original Sonic Generations story remains intact, the addition of Shadow’s storyline brings a unique twist that truly sets this version apart. Shadow’s journey not only revisits his complex past but also reintroduces players to old enemies, beloved allies, and iconic locations significant to Shadow’s story arc. For longtime fans, this extended storyline provides fresh insights into Shadow’s motivations and struggles, blending action with an exploration of his personal history. The game now offers two immersive experiences in one: Sonic’s classic race to restore time and Shadow’s darker, introspective journey through his memories and battles. By putting Shadow’s story in the spotlight, this release not only honors the original Sonic Generations but also reimagines it with a new focus, giving players like newcomers and dedicated fans a richer, more layered experience.

The Voices Behind the Hedgehogs

Shadow the Hedgehog is voiced by Kirk Thornton, who brings years of experience to the role, having voiced a range of memorable game and anime characters. Known for roles like Saix and Isa in Kingdom Hearts, Brandon Heat in Gungrave, Hotohori in Fushigi Yuugi, Klein in Sword Art Online, Hajime Saito in Rurouni Kenshin, and characters in Digimon, Thornton has a reputation for portraying complex and dynamic characters. Since taking over the role of Shadow in 2010 from Jason Griffith, Thornton has brought a consistent depth to the character. He captures Shadow’s signature dark and enigmatic nature while conveying the simmering anger beneath the surface. Even in moments when Shadow might appear vulnerable, Thornton ensures he quickly returns to his usual stoic, grumpy demeanor, preserving the character’s emotional restraint that fans have come to recognize and appreciate. Thornton’s portrayal adds a layer of intensity that resonates with Shadow’s identity, balancing his mystery with just the right touch of intensity.

Sonic the Hedgehog is voiced by Roger Craig Smith, whose extensive career includes over 170 characters on the Emmy-winning Regular Show, according to IMDb. Smith has lent his voice to numerous cartoons, video games, and films, bringing Sonic to life for Sega since 2010 (not including the films) and voicing Chris Redfield in the Resident Evil game series.

Sonic is famously cocky, with a confident, sometimes over-the-top attitude that fans love. Smith captures that spirit perfectly as he brings just the right amount of playful energy to the role, balancing Sonic’s trademark boldness with his lighthearted, carefree nature. He knows when to add that hint of attitude that makes Sonic who he is, giving fans the quick-witted, adventurous hedgehog they expect. Through Smith’s performance, Sonic’s personality shines through, from his humorous quips to his fearless approach to danger, delivering a character that feels true to Sonic’s legacy and charm.

Storytelling and Graphics

Sonic Generations has been captivating players since its original release in 2011. So, what keeps it so enjoyable and replayable? The game retains its exciting adventure-style gameplay and dynamic cutscenes that fans love, making it just as engaging today. The recent remaster has even refreshed some cutscenes, adding a new twist to familiar moments. When playing as Modern Sonic, players experience a fast-paced, third-person view, reminiscent of recent Sonic titles. In contrast, Classic Sonic’s levels bring back the nostalgic 2D side-scrolling gameplay of the original Sonic games, blending classic and modern styles in one experience. This unique dual gameplay approach, combined with the remastered graphics, ensures that Sonic Generations remains a fan favorite. The remaster also brings back familiar soundtracks and iconic locations that fans will instantly recognize, enhancing the nostalgia factor. With improved visuals, the gameplay feels brighter and clearer, adding a fresh polish to the classic Sonic Generations experience that fans know and love.

Shadow Generations offers a completely new game and story for players to dive into. Before jumping into the main gameplay, players have the option to explore Shadow’s backstory, adding an extra layer of depth. The gameplay itself is smooth and polished, ensuring a seamless experience without any noticeable drawbacks. While the tone is darker, which fits with the game’s focus on Shadow, it doesn’t take away from the overall fun. The darker atmosphere is mostly present during the levels, with the areas outside of them existing in a stark, empty “White Space.” As players progress and complete levels, they’ll start to see more color, but it’s a gradual process, and the lack of vibrant visuals outside the levels can feel a bit underwhelming. Still, the game remains engaging and enjoyable. Similar to Sonic Generations, Shadow Generations lets players revisit familiar locations, but this time, from Shadow’s perspective. Along the way, players encounter old enemies who serve as challenging bosses, adding a nostalgic touch while introducing new gameplay elements to keep things fresh.

Gotta Get It Fast!

Overall, Sonic X Shadow Generations is an engaging game that encapsulates the original Sonic Generations. It’s impressive how Sega not only remastered Sonic Generations but also introduced Shadow as a central character, giving him his own storyline. Offering two games in one, this is a must-play for fans and newcomers alike. With its engaging gameplay and fresh additions, it’s an experience that shouldn’t be missed. Plus, it’s sure to get fans even more excited for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie releasing later this year.
