‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Breaks Netflix Records

The Game Continues

In just 19 days, Squid Game’s latest season has garnered enough views to earn a spot on Netflix’s top 10 most-watched television series. Variety reports that Season 2 has cleared 152.5 million total views.

Top 10

Along with a weekly top 10, Netflix keeps an all-time list publicly available on its website. Bridgerton boasts the most representation, with all three seasons making it to the top 10. Stranger Things appears on the list for Seasons 3 and 4, which includes a number two spot for the latter. Lesser-known but highly popular shows, Fool Me Once and The Night Agent have also made the list in the number seven and eight spots respectively. With more than 152 million views, Squid Game will find itself ahead of the first season of Monsters, a show centered around Jeffrey Dahmer (115 million views), and behind Season 4 of Stranger Things (140.7 million views). The first season of the Netflix original Wednesday retains the number one spot with over 252 million views since its debut in the fall of 2022.

Hwang Dong-hyuk

The show’s creator and showrunner, Hwang Dong-hyuk pitched Squid Game for more than a decade before it was developed.

In 2008, Dong-hyuk first conceived the story as a feature film and was inspired by his real-world circumstances at that time, as he, his mother, and grandmother struggled financially during the global recession. Furthermore, he wanted the story to bear a message of caution about the pitfalls of capitalist societies and the lengths people will go for their well-being. Despite the promising script, the idea was met with a slew of rejection from actors and production groups that felt the movie was too risky to make.

Moreover, the initial reception prompted Dong-hyuk to set the screenplay aside and develop other projects, which included Silenced (2011) and The Fortress (2017). While Netflix began searching for its next big hit in international regions, Hwang pitched the script to Netflix’s Asia division. Accepted for the same daring nature and creativity that it had been rejected for in the past, it was agreed the story would be transitioned into a series. In September 2019, Netflix made the formal announcement that production would begin for the show.

All 16 episodes of Squid Game are available to stream on Netflix.
