'Superman' Opens up to $250 Million
The cape is back on the big screen. This is James Gunn’s first major film with DC. Superman opened to $220 million globally over the weekend. According to Forbes, this is the most successful standalone Superman movie to date.
‘Superman’ Rises Near Budget
According to Box Office Mojo, the film has grossed $250 million so far. Breaking this down shows that it has generated $30 million since opening weekend. On Monday, the film grossed $12.9 million. On Tuesday, the film grossed $17.1 million. These numbers are promising because they show a 32% increase from Monday to Tuesday. According to Variety, the film had a big budget. “The film cost $225 million and another $125 million to market globally”. This means the film is about to break even. It needs to continue to soar to become profitable. Financially, the film is doing well, but is it well-received by filmgoers?
The Reviews are Sky High
The reviews are in, and they show clear skies. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 93% fan score and an 83% critic score.
Over ten thousand users have submitted reviews, and the majority are overwhelmingly positive. One fan wrote, “Fantastic movie, great to see Superman back on the big screen, good storyline with lots of possibilities to build on.” Critics also responded favorably. An 83 is still a strong score, but not on the same level. Richard Whittaker of the Austin Chronicle praised, “The alien is the most human of us all, and this Superman lives up to his name: He is a super man”. However, Kyle Smith from the Wall Street Journal wrote, “Mr. Gunn is determined to shake things up a lot, and does. Different, however, is not always good”. So while many critics enjoyed the film, a few felt it fell short.
Clear Skies for Now
The film still has a way to go before the numbers are profitable. For now, statistics show that so far this week, the film is doing well. If the film continues on the path it is on, it can make money. Only time will tell what the future holds for the man in the red cape.
