The Sudden Death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner
Malcolm-Jamal Warner tragically died due to accidental drowning on July 20, 2025. Warner was known for his roles on The Cosby Show and The Resident. He died at the age of 54.
What Happened To Malcolm- Jamal Warner?
According to ABC News, Malcolm-Jamal Warner was on vacation with his family in Costa Rica. He was swimming with his 8-year-old daughter, and both were caught by a high current. Police confirmed to ABC News that surfers had spotted the two struggling in the current and went to help. Warner’s daughter was saved by a surfer using his board to bring her to safety. According to USA Today, a second man was swept away in the same current as Warner and is currently in critical condition. Warner was brought to shore by a volunteer lifeguard and was given CPR for 45 minutes. Unfortunately, he did not survive, and his cause of death was labeled as asphyxiation by submersion. The surfers who tried to help also survived. He died near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica.
Legacy Left Behind
Malcolm-Jamal Warner left an impact and legacy on friends, family, co-stars, and fans upon his death. According to Good Morning America, in 2013, Warner told the Television Academy that he would want to be remembered for his career and life after his work on The Cosby Show, which ended in 1992. He is being remembered by co-stars, fans, and family at this time. Warner’s co-star Raven-Symone, who played the role of Olivia Kendall on The Cosby Show, took to Instagram to post an emotional tribute.
“Words cannot express the pain and sadness, and surprise I feel with the recent loss of MJW. He was the big brother, he was a beacon, and he was one of the most multifaceted, talented men—so gentle.” She said in the audio clip. She finished out the clip by saying, “And my heart and soul and hugs and kisses go out to his daughter and his wife and his mother. I love you, and I know you’re watching over all of us now. Bye, Malcom.”
What Can Warner Be Seen In?
The Cosby Show is the show that blasted Warner into the spotlight when he was 13. He played the character of Theodore “Theo” Huxtable for eight seasons, from 1984 to 1992, when he was 21 and grew up on the set of the show. After The Cosby Show ended, Warner went on to play Malcolm McGee in the 1990s UPN sitcom Malcolm & Eddie. He also had notable recurring roles on the NBC sitcom Community as Yvette Nicole Brown’s character Shirley Bennett’s ex. During the 2010s, he continued to act in shows like FX’s Sons of Anarchy as the vice president of the motorcycle club named Sticky and Al Cowlings, a friend of O.J. Simpson, in the 2016 FX series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story from 2018 to 2023. Warner was featured in The Resident, a medical drama on Fox, as Dr. A.J. Austin.
