Hulu’s Line-Up Continues to Grow
Comedian Chris Distefano has a third special in the works, and it’s not going to Netflix this time.
Streaming Is A Joke
Stand-up comedy has become a dominating force in the world of streaming. Heading the rise of stand-up specials has been Netflix, which has invested heavily in an immersive library of content by gathering an impressive line-up of comedians. The range of talent at Netflix includes the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Jo Koy, Theo Von, Jeff Dunham, John Mulaney, and countless more. Until now, other streaming services haven’t been able to give Netflix a run for their money, other than Max, which has slowly been trickling out more high-profile comedians. However, Hulu has continued to expand its profile and recruit more talent, with Chris Distefano being its next addition.
Distefano’s third special, titled It’s Just Unfortunate, is executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel. His first special, Size 38 Waist, premiered in 2019 on Comedy Central. The comedy special was the first part of a deal made with Comedy Central, which was followed up with the series Stupid Questions with Chris Distefano, a weekly podcast titled Stand-Up with Chris Distefano, and two other series in development. His second special, Speshy Weshy, premiered on Netflix in 2022. Outside of stand-up, Distefano has expanded his reach by appearing on series and talk shows, including Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Pat McAfee Show, to name a few.
Hulu’s Aggressive Push
Most streamers haven’t been able to catch stand-up comedy specials in the way Netflix has. In a strategic move, Netflix has acquired names such as Dave Chappelle, newcomers such as Matt Rife, and everyone in between. Their stand-up specials typically are among the most streamed content, proving the profitability stand-up has had. While streamers such as Peacock and Amazon seemed to be lacking in these areas, others, such as Hulu, have taken strides to catch up. In recent years, Hulu has brought the talents of Bill Burr, Ilana Glazer, Jessica Kirson, and Jim Gaffigan to the platforms in an attempt to add to their libraries.
While Distefano and others featured on Hulu don’t receive the same number of views that Pete Davison or Ricky Gervais, it still shows Hulu and Disney’s attempts to become a destination for comedians. It’s also a move that shows Distefano’s continuous way of diversifying his name and his constant rise in the industry. Distefano sold out Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall last year, two of the most lucrative stages for comedians. While Distefano has yet to reach the levels of performers such as Seinfeld or Norm Macdonald, he has joined the ranks of the new breed of comedians, such as Rife and Shane Gillis, who collectively have been shown that comedy is still alive.
