Alice Birch’s ‘Sweetsick’ to Star Cate Blanchett

Blanchett to Join Alice Birch’s Directorial Debut

Cate Blanchett, a two-time Oscar winner, is set to star in Alice Birch’s Sweetsick, marking the filmmaker’s directorial debut at Searchlight Pictures.

Tip of the Iceberg

Alice Birch’s Sweetsick follows an unpredictable woman (Blanchett) who possesses a strange and piercing gift: the ability to see what people need most in life, usually at great personal cost. Other cast members will be announced shortly for Sweetsick, which will shoot this fall in the U.K. and Greece, with Searchlight Pictures producing it. Birch, who will write and direct her feature directorial debut, is best known for writing Lady Macbeth, the adaptations of Sally Rooney’s novels, Normal People, and Conversations with Friends as a miniseries.

Birch’s Statement

Sweetsick is being produced by Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, and Theo Barrowclough from House Productions (Conclave, The Wonder) in company with Blanchett and her Dirty Films banner. Lee Groombridge will also produce with Film4 as executive producer and co-financer. Deadline reports Birch’s statement, which reads as “I could not be more excited to be making my debut feature as a director with such an extraordinary team of filmmakers and collaborators.

I am in the safest hands with Tessa Ross and her brilliant team at House, and am so proud to be working with Searchlight and Film4. To have the peerless Cate Blanchett at the centre of it is thrilling.” Ross added, “We’re all very big believers in Alice Birch, and it’s been wonderful to see that the fantastic team she’s gathered around her, not least the amazing Cate, feel the same way – all drawn in by her bold, beautiful vision.”

The Team

Blanchett won two Oscars for Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine and Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator. Her other feature credits are Searchlight’s Nightmare Alley, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Cinderella, Thor: Ragnarok, Ocean’s 8, and Don’t Look Up. Birch came into the limelight after screenwriting for Lady Macbeth, and also worked on the TV adaptation of Rooney’s novel Normal People, for which she earned an Emmy nomination. Blanchett is represented by CAA and Birch by UTA, alongside Davis LAW Group and Giles Smart at United Agents.
