Disney Feels the Heat of Suspension
Disney fans flock to cancel Disney+ subscriptions in support of Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel’s show was recently pulled from the air by ABC, which is owned by Disney, after remarks about the Trump administration.
Disney Faces Backlash
Disney now faces backlash over the choice to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely. According to Newsweek, boycott calls from fans have grown after ABC, which Disney owns, announced it would suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The show is suspended indefinitely due to complaints from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair, Brendan Carr. According to Newsweek, Carr stated that Kimmel’s comments in his opening monologue “appeared to mislead the American public directly.” Carr also said that “We’re going to continue to hold these broadcasters accountable to the public interest, and if the broadcasters don’t like that simple solution, they can turn in their licence in to the FCC.”
Fans Take To Social Media
Fans have taken to social media to express anger at Disney. Various Disney+ subscribers stated that they are canceling subscriptions altogether in disapproval of how Disney handled the situation. X user Reed Galen took to the platform to write, “Goodbye @DisneyPlus. I won’t miss you.” Another user, Jody Vance, stated, “ Weird. @DisneyPlus keeps crashing when I try to cancel my subscription. Wonder if it’s a bit busy.”
Even actors have taken to television and social media to voice their distaste for Disney. According to Newsweek, Actor Jake Ferree told CNN, “This affects every aspect of free speech. We should be able to express ourselves. That’s the point of art.”
Jimmy Kimmel Finds Big Reaction
On his September 15th show, Kimmel addressed the reaction to the assassination of conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk. He stated in his opening monologue: “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it. In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.” The comment did not go over well with the FCC or Nexstar, which, according to the New York Times, owns 32 ABC-affiliated stations. Nexstar and the FCC put pressure on ABC. According to the New York Times, Nexstar announced it would not be showing Jimmy Kimmel Live! on any of the local stations until further notice. Hours later, ABC’s parent company, Disney, announced that Kimmel’s show will be suspended indefinitely. No information has been released about whether or when the show will return to the air.
