ABC Brings Back Kimmel After Free Speech Outcry
Jimmy Kimmel is returned to the air on Tuesday night after a short suspension. ABC said the decision came after discussions with Disney, which had paused the show last week to ease tensions during a sensitive national moment.
Jimmy Kimmel’s Live! Returns to Airwaves
After a brief suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show, which led to a nationwide debate over the Trump administration and free speech, the ABC host is returned to broadcast on Tuesday night. According to Deadline, a spokesman from Disney made a statement: “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return to the show on Tuesday.”
What Led to The Suspension
The move comes after an extraordinary week in the media, beginning with Kimmel’s on-air comment on the September 15 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Concerning Charlie Kirk’s assassin. Deadline reports the comment, which was said last Monday night: “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it.” The FCC chairman Brendan Carr subsequently threatened ABC to “find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead” and he also said that the comedian’s comments were “some of the sickest conduct possible.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the following hours after Carr’s comment, affiliate groups Nexstar, which is currently awaiting FCC approval for a planned merger, and Sinclair, informed ABC that they would preempt Kimmel’s show. Although Nexstar later claimed its decision had nothing to do with Carr’s remarks, the timing suggested otherwise. Disney made its own decision moments later to pause the show.
The Entertainment Industry and Politicians on Kimmel’s Suspension
What ensued were days of discussions between Disney and Kimmel, as debate over the suspension amplified on both sides of the political aisle. According to Deadline, celebrities such as Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep described it as “government threats to our freedom of speech.” Others, including Tatiana Maslany, the star of Marvel’s Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Rosie O’Donnell, urged viewers to cancel their Disney subscriptions. Kimmel’s late-night peers like Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver, as well as former late-night hosts David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and Jay Leno, stood with him in this time of his career.
He also received support from some politicians. California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on X, “The @GOP does not believe in free speech. They are censoring you in real time.” The 44th POTUS, Barack Obama, also weighed in, he said, “After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t.” Ted Cruz, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, the body that oversees the FCC, warned it was dangerous for the government to silence free speech as it could set a standard, and when Democrats regain the presidency, they could use that precedent to justify silencing conservatives in a similar way, Deadline reports.
